East Mountain Information
On the Eastern side of the Sandias lie the communities of the East Mountain Area. The mountains act as a geographic barrier between urban Albuquerque and the eastern slopes. A quick 15 minute ride from the city reveals pinion, pine & juniper forests. The rural atmosphere offers all the enchantment of mountain & country living just minutes to the city.
With an elevation of approximately 6500-7200 feet, temperatures are 8-10 degrees cooler than the city. Typically we get twice the precipitation of Albuquerque, including 100-150 inches of snow. The winter months are a site to behold with the awe inspiring view of the snow covered mountains. Residents stay busy with winter activities like cross country skiing, alpine skiing at the Sandia Ski area or relaxing with a book next to the warm glow of a wood burning stove. In the summer, escape the heat of the city & enjoy activities like golfing at the nationally recognized Paa-ko golf course, horseback riding or hiking in the national forest.
Lot sizes vary from ½ acre up to 40 acres with 2 acres being the average. There are 2 school districts serving the area between Tijeras & Moriarty. They comprise 7 elementary schools, 3 Junior High schools, and 3 high schools. Many of the East Mountain schools have earned an excellent reputation. There are many conveniences such as restaurants, grocery stores, banks, western & tack stores, video rentals, dry cleaning, and galleries. There are several day-care centers for the children, a gym, and 2 libraries. Recently, a new community center opened with adjacent playing fields. The town of Edgewood is planning a new town center with amenities including an aquatic center.
